Indonesia Accelerates Infrastructure Development in New Papua Provinces

Indonesia’s Ministry of Home Affairs (MOHA) is pushing for accelerated infrastructure development in the four new autonomous regions (DOB) in Papua: South Papua, Central Papua, Highland Papua, and Southwest Papua. Vice Minister of Home Affairs, Ribka Haluk, stated that the Ministry is actively coordinating with relevant ministries to drive this acceleration.
“We are currently coordinating with the Ministry of Public Works and Housing,” Ribka said on Monday, January 27, 2025.
According to Ribka, coordination with the PU Ministry focuses on infrastructure funded by the State Budget (APBN). Furthermore, the MOHA has scheduled meetings with the Ministry of Finance and the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas) to discuss the expedited development of government infrastructure in the four new Papuan regions.
Ribka emphasized the need to construct essential infrastructure, including the Governor’s Office, the Papuan People’s Representative Council (DPRP) Office, and the Papuan People’s Assembly (MRP) Office. This construction is mandated by the Law concerning the establishment of the four new autonomous regions in Papua.
Additionally, Ribka urged the acting governors in each new Papuan region to proactively support the acceleration of development, particularly projects funded by the Regional Budget (APBD).
This proactive approach is crucial, alongside the MOHA’s oversight of various APBN-funded projects. “This will ensure that development progress in the four new autonomous regions can be completed or undertaken promptly,” she said.
As background, the division of Papua Province occurred in mid-2022, creating three new provinces: South Papua, Central Papua, and Highland Papua. At the end of 2022, West Papua was also divided. The new province of Southwest Papua was established with its capital in Sorong, while West Papua’s capital shifted to Manokwari.
