Further development of superior commodities in Papua is expected to not only improve the local economy but also contribute to local revenue

The Papua Provincial Government through the Regional Development Planning Research and Innovation Agency (Baperida) is committed to continuing to develop leading commodities in this region. This step was taken as an effort to encourage local economic growth while increasing investment interest in the area known as Bumi Cenderawasih.

Head of the Economic Division of Baperida Papua, Bintang Yuliana, explained that currently the government’s main focus is on developing the fisheries sector, especially in Soryar Village located in East Biak District, Biak Numfor Regency. She also added, “In September 2024, we have designated Bring Village, located in Kemtuk District, Jayapura Regency, as an independent village, which is famous for its agricultural products.” Bintang emphasized that the fisheries sector was chosen for further development because Papua Province has great potential in the field of natural resources, both in terms of green gold (agriculture) and blue gold (fisheries). “Therefore, we are now also developing Soryar Village in the fisheries sector,” he said.

Further development of superior commodities in Papua is expected to not only improve the local economy but also contribute to local revenue. Acting Governor of Papua, Ramses Limbong, appealed to all regional apparatus organizations to be more active in developing the local economy. This is expected to be one solution to improve people’s welfare, especially in rural areas.

“Papua has abundant natural wealth in terms of green and blue economy. I urge the heads of regional apparatus organizations to be more proactive in encouraging economic development based on local potential,” added Ramses. He also emphasized that in Jayapura Regency there is agribusiness potential, while in Biak Numfor there is fisheries and nature tourism potential.

Ramses further explained the importance of each regional apparatus organization to develop local potential that may not have been optimally developed. In this context, the nine regencies and cities in Papua Province have unique characteristics. Therefore, each regional apparatus organization is expected to be able to carefully identify and utilize the potential in each region. For example, in Biak, in addition to developing marine products, they are also encouraging the expansion of sago plantations.

With these steps, it is hoped that the Papuan economy will continue to develop through the sustainable use of existing resources.
