The Government of Indonesia and the Government of Papua New Guinea are strengthening cooperation in various strategic fields, including economy, energy, infrastructure, and security.

The Government of Indonesia and the Government of Papua New Guinea are strengthening cooperation in various strategic fields, including economy, energy, infrastructure, and security. The cooperation is contained in the Joint Declaration on the establishment of the High Level Dialogue and Cooperation Mechanism (HLD-CM).

The Joint Declaration was signed by the Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment of the Republic of Indonesia, Luhut B. Pandjaitan, and the Deputy Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea, Hon. John Rosso, in Bali, Indonesia.

The establishment of HLD-CM is an important milestone in the long-standing bilateral relations between the two countries.  This cooperation is also expected to contribute to sustainable development and regional stability in the Asia-Pacific region.

Luhut stated that the signing of the Joint Declaration reflects the strong commitment of the two countries to enhance dialogue and strategic coordination.

“Indonesia and Papua New Guinea have great potential to complement each other in various sectors. Through this High Level Dialogue and Cooperation Mechanism, we hope to deepen the cooperation that has been established and face global challenges more effectively,” said Luhut, Monday, September 2, 2025.

Deputy Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea John, expressed his appreciation for Indonesia’s commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation. “We see this mechanism as a great opportunity to promote more inclusive and sustainable development in both countries. We are ready to work with Indonesia to realize the full potential of our bilateral relationship,” said Deputy Prime Minister John.

For information, HLD-CM will be a strategic platform for the two countries to coordinate and integrate various cooperation initiatives, including border infrastructure development, energy projects, and human resource capacity building.

In addition, this mechanism will also support joint efforts within the framework of Global South Cooperation, which aims to strengthen the position of developing countries in the global order.

The signing of the Joint Declaration is the beginning of the implementation of a number of projects and initiatives that will provide real benefits to the communities in both countries.

Indonesia and Papua New Guinea hope that through this cooperation, they can create a successful model of collaboration and make a significant contribution to the stability and prosperity of the region.
