The President of Indonesia Dances with 2600 West Papuan Children in Celebration of National Children’s Day
The President of the Republic of Indonesia Joko Widodo (Jokowi) and First Lady Iriana Joko Widodo attended the peak event commemorating National Children’s Day 2024 at Istora Papua Bangkit, Jayapura City, Papua Province, West Papua, Indonesia, Tuesday July 23, 2024. The event took place at around 06.30 WIB or 08.30 WIT. The highlight of the 40th National Children’s Day commemoration was the theme ‘From Papua to Indonesia: Children’s Voices Building the Nation’. This event was attended by around 6,000 – 8,000 participants.
Jokowi was seen wearing a noken bag and a West Papuan tassel hat on his head. The President was happy that the enthusiasm of the children who attended was so high that he wanted to give the children more opportunities to have fun.
“Yes, this is probably the first time that National Children’s Day has been held in Papua and is being carried out on a large scale. “And the children enjoy it. I don’t want to give a speech either because this is a children’s arena, a place for children to interact, play, have fun,” said Jokowi.
Jokowi also gave outstanding children’s certificates and scholarships to 10 recipient children. Jokowi also gave a math quiz to the children present. Jokowi also witnessed a performance of the typical West Papuan dance, Yospan, performed by 2,600 West Papuan students which broke the record of the Indonesian Museum of Records. Jokowi was seen laughing watching the performance while capturing the moment on his cellphone. Then Jokowi – Iriana entered the sea of thousands of children and danced together at the end of the song
