Motorbike Taxi Driver Shot by Papuan Separatists, Victim Suffers Head Injury
A motorcycle taxi driver in Puncak Jaya Regency, Central Papua Province, West Papua was shot by Papuan Separatists. The victim named Husen (39) survived, but suffered a gunshot wound to the back of the head.
It is suspected that the Papuan separatists who took action were the Yambi group, the leader of Bumi Walo Enumbi. The victim came from Rejing Village, Teris District, Probolinggo Regency, East Java Province.
The victim was shot while on the Downhill Road to Kota Lama, Mulia District, Puncak Jaya Regency. It is known that this incident occurred on Wednesday, June 19 2024, at around 15.30 GMT +9.
Husen, who works as a motorbike taxi driver in Puncak Jaya Regency, Central Papua, was shot after delivering an order of food to the Indonesian Army Post, Yonif 115/ML Task Force.
Husen (39) was shot on Wednesday (19/6/2024) at 15:30 WIT, around the Indonesian Army Post, Yonif 115/ML Task Force. The perpetrators were Papuan separatists from the Yambi group led by Bumi Walo Enumbi.
As a result, Husen suffered a gunshot wound to the back of the head. Even so, the victim was conscious.
Shooting Chronology
The shooting incident started when Husen bought basic necessities from Mustiko’s kiosk, then delivered goods ordered by the Indonesian Army Post Yonif 115/ML Task Force. After that, Husen returned to Kota Mulia to continue his motorbike taxi driver activities.
Luckily, the victim survived after the bullet that penetrated his helmet only caused injuries to his earlobe and penetrated the back of his head. The victim, who was conscious, then left the location on a motorbike.
The incident was seen by Manto Telenggen, a local resident. The witness saw the victim riding a motorbike unsteadily and blood dripping down his back shirt.
Then, Manto Telenggen stopped the victim from getting on his motorbike and then took him to Musiko’s kiosk. When he arrived at the kiosk, Husen said he was shot. “I was shot by Papuan Separatists,” Husen said briefly to kiosk owner Mustiko.
Puncak Jaya Police, Central Papua are currently pursuing the shooter. Head of the Puncak Jaya Regional Police Office, Kuswara, said that the victim was first discovered by a witness who happened to pass by the crime scene (TKP) and saw the victim was already limp and covered in blood.
“The witness then quickly took the victim to the Mulia Regional Government Hospital and reported the incident to the Puncak Jaya Regional Police Station Picket,” said Kuswara.
According to Kuswara, the victim is currently undergoing medical treatment at the Mulia Regional Government Hospital, and is conscious even though he suffered injuries from the shooting. “The victim is undergoing medical treatment and is conscious. We hope for the best for his recovery,” he said.
Kuswara emphasized that the Puncak Jaya Regional Police will investigate this case until the perpetrator can be arrested and held accountable for his actions. “We are committed to thoroughly investigating this case and ensuring that the perpetrator receives the appropriate punishment,” he stressed.
Puncak Jaya Police appealed to the public to remain calm and report any information that could help the investigation and pursuit of the perpetrator. Puncak Jaya Regional Police have also increased patrols in the area to ensure public security and order, as well as prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
