Papua’s Douw Aturure Airport is Fully Operational
Douw Aturure Nabire Airport, Central Papua Province, West Papua Indonesia has been fully operational starting February 22, 2024. This full operation is carried out in accordance with the provisions of the recorded Aeronautical Information Publication (AIP). Director General of Air Transportation at the Indonesian Ministry of Transportation, Kristi Endah Murni, said that the full operation of Douw Aturure airport also marked the official closure of the old Nabire Airport.
Kristi really appreciates that all parties have worked hard for the smooth transfer and operation of Nabire Lama Airport to Douw Aturure Airport. He hopes that the existence of this airport can become an access link for communities in disadvantaged, remote and outer border areas.
“Thank you for the support of all parties so that today Douw Aturure Nabire Airport can be fully operational. Hopefully it will be useful in accommodating more people’s needs for air transportation services, and opening up more accessibility for people in disadvantaged, remote and outer border areas,” said Kristi.
“Let’s guard it together and participate in creating aviation safety and security,” continued Kristi.
Meanwhile, the Head of the Douw Aturure Airport Management Unit (UPBU), Juprianto Pali, explained that this airport will serve round-trip pioneer flights with Smart Aviation and Wings Air airlines for various routes.
For Smart Aviation airlines there are flight routes Nabire-Enarotali, Nabire-Illu, Nabire-Mulia, Nabire-Faowi, Nabire-Ilaga, Nabire-Waghete, and Nabire-Bilorai. Meanwhile, Wings Air serves the Nabire-Rendani, Nabire-Timika and Nabire-Sentani routes.
According to him, the entire process of full operation of Douw Aturure airport as well as the closure of Nabire Lama airport was carried out after coordination meetings with all relevant stakeholders, including the Central Papua Provincial Government and the Nabire Regency Government as well as a number of other parties such as the Meteorology, Climatology, Geophysics Agency, the Indonesian National Electricity Company, and others. .
“We have confirmed the readiness of Airnav Indonesia, Meteorology Climatology Geophysics Agency, Pertamina Depot, Indonesia National Electricity Company, Security, Transportation Service, as well as the availability of clean water at Douw Aturure Nabire Airport,” concluded Juprianto.
For information, previously Douw Aturure Nabire Airport was inaugurated by President Joko Widodo in November 2023. This airport was inaugurated at the same time as the inauguration of Siboru Airport, Fakfak, West Papua
These two airports themselves are included in the Indonesian National Strategic Project. Construction of Siboru Airport itself started from 2020 to 2023, while Douw Aturure Baru Airport was built from 2020 to 2022.
Even though construction was completed in 2022 and inaugurated in 2023, this airport will only be fully operational in February 2024.
