Profile of Central Papua Province, New Province in West Papua
Central Papua Province which is a New Autonomous Region (DOB) on Papua Island, Indonesia. Based on Clause 6 of Indonesian Law, Number 15 of 2022, the capital city of Central Papua Province is Nabire, in Nabire Regency. Central Papua Province consists of 8 regency, 130 districts, 36 sub-districts and 1,172 villages, with a total area of 61,012.18 kmĀ²
The area covered includes Nabire Regency (11,112.61 km2), Paniai (6,525.25), Mimika (21,633 km2), Dogiyai (4,237.4 km2), Intan Jaya (3,922.02 km2), Deiyai (537.39 km2), Puncak Regency (8,055 km2), and Puncak Jaya. (4,989.51 km2). The territory of Central Papua Province also includes 50 islands that are included in the Nabire and Mimika Regencies.
The islands are as follows: Aamone Island, Ahe, Ahiba, Ajawawa, Anggrameos, Bon, Botre, Small Botre, Bumbui, Deniaje, Hariti, Here, Here Uti, Hinabua, Iwowaje, Kabuai, Kaririai, Kiki, Kumburi Kunure, Kuwam, Madiana, Mangga Island, Nanimaje, Marua, Mora, Mowirin, Nu Buri, Nu Mini, Nuta Barita, Nuta Utita, Pepaya Island, Purure, Rage, Ratewa, Roene, Rori, Roriegi, Rorobo, Runggawor, Sariwe, Si, Warahire, Waru, Amamapare Island, Anjing Island, Awatiri, Bidadari Island, Puriri, and Yapero.
The boundaries of the Province of Central Papua are:
1. Northern Part: Waropen Regency, Mamberamo Raya Regency, and Cenderawasih Bay;
2. Eastern Part: Lanny Jaya Regency, Nduga Regency, Tolikara Regency and Asmat Regency;
3. South: Aru Sea;
4. West: Kaimana Regency and Teluk Wondama Regency, West Papua Province.
Population and Tribes
According to data from the 2020 Population Census, the total population of the regions in Central Papua Province, namely Paniai Regency is 220,410 people, Nabire Regency is 169,136 people, Mimika is 311,969 people, Dogiyai is 116,206 people, Intan Jaya is 135,043 people, Deiyai is 99,091 people, Puncak is 114,741 people, and Puncak Jaya as many as 224,527 souls.
BPS data for the 2021 projected population details the population of Paniai Regency as many as 223,467 people, Nabire Regency 170,914 people, Mimika 316,295 people, Dogiyai 117,818 people, Intan Jaya 136,916 people, Deiyai 100,466 people, Puncak 115,474 people, and Puncak Jaya 227,641 people.
Nabire is inhabited by tribes on the coast who are included in the Saireri customary area, including the Yaur, Wate, Mora, Umari, Napan, and Yerisiam tribes. The central part of Central Papua is the Jayawijaya Mountains which are inhabited by tribes such as Mee, Moni and Amungme who still maintain their traditional lives. Meanwhile, the southern part of Central Papua is Mimika Regency which is inhabited by the Kamoro tribe.
Data from the Central Bureau of Statistics through the 2010 Indonesian Population Census, ethnic groups in Papua are categorized as Papuans and Non-Papuans or not native Papuans. From the census data, for the Central Papua region, the population is based on ethnicity according to male sex, namely 349,634 people or 77.26% are Papuans and the remaining 102,916 people or 22.74% are non-Papuans. Most of the population in Mimika and Nabire districts are immigrants or are not native Papuans.
Central Papua Province will move on from the condition of the Human Development Index (HDI) in eight districts which is still very low, namely, Nabire HDI 69.15; HDI Dogiyai 55; HDI Deiyai 49.96; Paniai HDI 56.07; HDI Intan Jaya 48.99; Puncak Jaya HDI 48.34, Puncak HDI 43.17; and HDI Mimika 74.47.
In terms of custom and characteristics, the division area of Central Papua is in Adat Me Pago. The characteristics of the area are the coast and mountains with the characteristics of the territory of the Mee tribe who live around Lake Paniai, Lake Tage, Lake Tigi, Valley Kamu (now known as Dogiyai) and the Mapiha/Mapisa mountains.

Economic Potential
Central Papua, which has mining resources, one of which belongs to PT Freeport Indonesia. The economic potential of Central Papua Province is in the form of metals in the form of gold, silver and copper. The identification of gold reserves in this block is estimated at more than 116 million tonnes of gold and silver containing mineral ore.
Tourist
Cenderawasih Bay National Park is a marine national park located on the border of West Papua and Central Papua, precisely in Nabire. It is a tourist spot with high natural wealth and is still beautiful, in the form of blue seas with small white sandy islands and coral reefs with a diversity of marine life. In addition, visitors can also dive with whale sharks (Rhincodon typus) which can be found in Kwatisore.
The Jayawijaya Mountains are a high mountain range in Papua whose highest mountain is the highest peak in Indonesia and Oceania. This highest mountain is called Puncak Jaya, Cartensz Pyramid, or Nemangkawi and has a height of 4,884 m. As the highest mountain in Oceania, Puncak Jaya is included in the Seven Peaks or Seven Summits, namely the highest mountains of the seven continents recorded by the legendary climber Reinhold Messner. Climbing the seven peaks is the dream of mountain climbers around the world. Puncak Jaya is covered with eternal snow which is threatened to melt due to climate change.
Kali Kyura is a river located right near the Trans-Papua Road that connects Mimika and Deiyai Regencies. In Kali Kyura there is also a waterfall which is located approximately 75.86 km from Timika City.
