The Papua Pegunungan Province is one of three new autonomous regions (DOB) in Papua. The area of the Papua Pegunungan Province is 108,476 square kilometers. The parent division is Papua Province.

The Papua Pegunungan Province is one of three new autonomous regions (DOB) in Papua.

The area of the Papua Pegunungan Province is 108,476 square kilometers. The parent division is Papua Province.

The other two new autonomous regions are the Province of Papua Pegunungan and the Province of South Papua. Now, Indonesia has a total of 38 provinces. Meanwhile, Papua Pegunungan Province  is the only province in Indonesia that does not border waters or sea areas.

In other words, the Central Mountains Province was a landlocked area. Papua Pegunungan Province is held by the Acting Governor, Nikolaus Kondomo.

The formation of the Papua Pegunungan Province is regulated through Law Number 16 of 2022 which was signed by President Joko Widodo on 25 July 2022. Based on this law, the capital city of Papua Pegunungan Province is located in Wamena, Jayawijaya.

The following Regencys are included in the Papua Mountains Province

1. Jayawijaya Regency

With an area of 13,925.31 km2, Jayawijaya Regency is divided into 40 Regencys. This Regency has the advantage of natural tourism potential with the Baliem Valley surrounded by the Jayawijaya Mountains. In addition, this region also favors the forestry, livestock and fisheries sectors.

2. Gunung Bintang Regency

Gunung Bintang Regency has an area of 15,683 square kilometers. Gunung Bintang Regency consists of 34 Regencys and the capital is Oksibil Regency.The majority of the area in the Gunung Bintang is located on a mountainous plateau with an altitude of 400 to 4,000 meters above sea level. Most of the Bintang Mountains area is mountainous, especially in the west, while residents live on the mountain slopes. The potential for superior regional commodities ranges from food agriculture such as tubers to plantations.

3. Lanny Jaya Regency

Lanny Jaya Regency has an area of 6,585 cubic kilometers with 39 districts. Lanny Jaya has a highland topography, the whole area is hilly and mountainous. The leading sectors in this region are agriculture, forestry, animal husbandry and fisheries.

4. Central Mamberamo Regency

Having an area of 1,275 cubic kilometers, Central Mamberamo Regency consists of 5 Regencys. The potential for superior regional commodities ranges from corn and cassava farming, plantations, animal husbandry, to fisheries.

5. Nduga Regency

Nduga Regency has an area of 12,941 cubic kilometers or 4.08 percent of the total area of Papua Province. Consisting of 8 Regencys, Nduga has the potential for forestry commodities, livestock dominated by pigs, fisheries, and plantations dominated by coffee, red fruit, coconut, sugarcane and sago.

6. Tolikara Regency

The area of Tolikara Regency reaches 14,263 kilometers which is divided into 46 Regencys. Dominated by the highlands with an altitude of more than 1,000 meters above sea level, the agricultural sector is the leading economic activity in this region, including rice and tubers.

7. Yahukimo Regency

Yahukimo Regency has an area of 17,152 kilometers with 51 Regencys. A number of leading commodities in this region are coffee, red fruit, and sago plantations. Then, the forestry sector as well as pig, cattle and goat farming.

8. Yalimo Regency

Yalimo has an area of 3,568.52 kilometers or 1.1 percent of the total area of Papua Province.

This Regency consists of 5 Regencys. Land potential utilized in this region includes corn, cassava, coffee and coconut. Other sectors which are also leading commodities are forestry, animal husbandry and fisheries.

Borderline

The border areas of the Papua Mountains Province are as follows:

North: Papua Province

West: Central Papua Province

South: South Papua Province

East: Papua New Guinea

Papua Mountains Province is bordered by Central Papua Province on the west side.
