Generals of Papua
For decades, Papuan been served as servicemember in Indonesian army and police. Some Papuan become general in army, navy, and police.
Here are some of them:
Lieutenant General Joppye Onesimus Wayangkau
General Wayangkau served in army 1986-2020. Born in Serui, General Wayangkau tour of duty included in Papua, Aceh, Timor, Central Java, and army HQ. His final post was commander to office of central territory policy. He was first ever commander to army regional office (KODAM) XVII/Kasuari in Papua.
Lieutenant General Ali Hamdan Bogra
General Bogra served in army 1987-2021. He was commander of Kodam Kasuari after General Wayangkau’s term. One of his son is serving as police officer.
Vice Admiral Freddy Numberi
Admiral Numberi was born in Serui and served in navy between 1971-1999. He enrolled to Indonesia military academy (AKABRI) in 1968. He enrolled as Indonesian from Papua.
Aside as former navy flag officer, he used to assign as acting Governor for Papua. He served as minister in several post as well. Admiral Numberi was Indonesian Ambassador to Italy and Malta.
Commissioner General Paulus Waterpauw
General Waterpauw served in Indonesian police 1987-2021. He is acting Governor of West Papua Province. This three-star police general was assigned across Indonesia. He served, twice, as commander of police regional office.
Brigadier General Abraham Atururi
The late General Atururi was mariner. Born in Serui, General Atururi serve in navy 1973-1999. He was Regent of Sorong in 1992, then vice governor of Papua 1996-2000. He served as Governor of West Papua 2003-2017, as acting governor in 2003-2005 then elected in 2006.
